Co-ops may be the least understood business organization in America. The proposed use of co-ops to manage health care costs attracted sharp criticism from the left and the right. Senator Jay Rockefeller suggested that co-ops were suspect business organizations. Shawn Hannity suggested that co-ops are socialist organizations. Rockefeller and Hannity are both wrong.
Co-ops are Americana through and through. What other business organization fits so well with the American dream of prosperity than co-ops with their emphasis on distribution of earnings according to use rather than onwership? When someone tells you that Co-ops are foreigners in a country that operates under free market principles as the USA does, you should counter that cooperatives are as much a part of America as apple pie and baseball.
I hope you'll frequently join me on this blog. I look forward to hearing what you think about cooperatives.
